Lore

Son of Corlys and Rhaenys, Laenor Velaryon was his father's heir and one of the few men of his generation to ride a dragon β€” Seasmoke, a grey-silver beast bonded to him from his youth. He was a knight of renown, a veteran of the Stepstones campaign, and the eligible match his house wanted for the heir to the Iron Throne.

He wed Princess Rhaenyra in the great wedding at King's Landing, and the union was political from the first: both had their own loves, and the marriage went unconsummated in every telling that survives. Rhaenyra's three sons were raised as Velaryons, though every whisper in the realm called them Strongs, and Laenor's convenience to the lie made him a cuckold in the songs.

In 129 AC Laenor vanished β€” reported dead, his body burned beyond recognition in a fire that answered no questions. The death cleared the way for Rhaenyra's remarriage to Daemon, and the whispers that the knight had simply sailed east never entirely stopped. Of all the players of the Dance, he is the one whose final act may have been simply to leave.
